Ethicon Physiomesh

Experienced Product Liability Attorneys Serving Victims of Ethicon Physiomesh

Physiomesh is a hernia patch made of non-absorbable polypropylene intended for hernia repair and strengthening of weak and damaged tissue in the abdominal wall. It is manufactured and marketed by Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Although this medical device is offered as a solution for hernia repair, people who have Physiomesh implanted actually face a high risk of infection, migration of the mesh, mesh removal, and required further surgeries. Across the United States, numerous medical device lawsuits have been filed and claims are being reviewed for consumers who have suffered injuries from Ethicon Physiomesh which could have been avoided if adequate warnings had been provided. To speak with an Ethicon Physiomesh lawyer regarding injuries sustained by yourself or a loved one, call Nahon, Saharovich & Trotz. Our product liability lawyers are ready to take your call today.

What Is Physiomesh?

Physiomesh is a coated hernia mesh that was approved in 2010 by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). It is made from polypropylene and is intended for hernia repair and to strengthen weak spots in the abdominal wall. If defective, it can cause serious side effects. Due to high failure rates of the medical device, in May 2016, Ethicon issued an Urgent Field Safety Notice announcing a voluntary global market recall of Physiomesh, which instructed doctors that they should no longer use this product for hernia repair.

Physiomesh Side Effects

Medical research has shown that Physiomesh can cause serious side effects including, but not limited to:

  • Hernia recurrence
  • Adhesion
  • Intestinal blockage
  • Surgery
  • Mesh migration
  • Mesh shrinkage
  • Perforation (abdominal holes)
  • Chronic or intermittent pain
  • Infection and swelling
Pursuing Compensation for Injuries Caused by Ethicon Physiomesh

Across the United States, lawsuits have been filed by Ethicon Physiomesh lawyers against Ethicon and Johnson & Johnson alleging their products were defectively designed and manufactured, leading to unintended injuries after being used in a reasonably foreseeable manner. Because Physiomesh has such a high rate of hernia recurrence, revision surgery, and other complications, patients could be substantially damaged. Damages in a Physiomesh lawsuit can include medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, and loss of consortium. These elements of damages are typically compensated for as compensatory damages. Punitive damages, on the other hand, are a separate class of damages that can be obtained in a medical device or product liability case. These are awarded as punishment against a large corporation, typically for acts like knowingly hiding risks, purposely failing to warn patients and doctors, and deliberately skirting FDA regulations.

To recover compensation for injuries caused by Physiomesh, you will need expert witnesses to testify as to the link between the product and the injuries. Our Ethicon Physiomesh attorneys have the resources to consult with qualified experts. Many complex medical device lawsuits can eventually become a class action or multidistrict litigation (MDL), meaning there are strict procedural guidelines in federal court that must be followed. If you suspect you have suffered harm related to hernia mesh, contact an experienced personal injury lawyer immediately to discuss your options.
