Car accidents occurring at intersections are prevalent in St. Louis and throughout the United States, often with catastrophic consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 40% of the almost 6 million crashes in the U.S. in 2008 were intersection-related crashes.

Intersection crashes are particularly dangerous because the highest impact of the collision is often the place in the vehicle where the passengers or driver is sitting, leading to severe physical injuries and sometimes even death. In addition, intersection accidents can lead to permanent disabilities, pedestrian accidents, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other devastating outcomes for the injured party.

If you suffered injuries or property damage in a car accident at an intersection in St. Louis, contact the car accident attorneys at NST Law to understand your legal rights and learn if and how you can receive compensation. We are a law firm dedicated to helping car accident victims obtain payouts to aid in their recovery and ease the financial burdens that accompany the aftermath of a crash.

Common Causes of Intersection Crashes

Crashes frequently occur at intersections because actions such as turning and crossing over in front of other vehicles increase the likelihood of a collision. Common causes of intersection crashes include:

Distracted driving is the most common cause of intersection crashes. A driver may be distracted by using a cell phone, texting, eating, drinking, rubbernecking, talking to other people in the car, or changing music on the radio or their playlist. While distracted, a driver may not notice that a yellow light has turned red or that another vehicle is coming into the intersection.

Illegal turns are also a common cause of intersection crashes, such as where the intersection does not allow right turns at a red light or where a driver pulls out in front of another car that’s moving at a high rate of speed. Also often linked to intersection crashes is when a driver fails to use turn signals, so other drivers aren’t alerted that the driver is slowing down to turn.

Finally, while drunk driving can lead to many types of crashes, drunk driving accidents are widespread at intersections because of the impaired driver’s slowed reflexes. Due to their lack of awareness and poor judgment and reaction times, they may not be alerted to a potential collision until it’s too late to avoid it.

Common Injuries From Intersection Crashes

Injuries from car accidents happening at intersections in St. Louis can range from minor to severe and sometimes even deadly. Common injuries from intersection crashes include:

  • Broken bones
  • Soft-tissue injuries
  • Neck and back injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries and paralysis
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
  • Internal bleeding
  • Burns, lacerations, and contusions

The most severe injuries usually occur when the crash is a head-on or T-bone collision. These injuries can result in pricey medical treatment, leading to mounting bills.

Persons in intersection crashes can also suffer from non-physical injuries, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), often manifesting as anxiety, depression, hypervigilance, sleep disorders, and other psychological trauma. Additionally, if the person’s physical injuries are long-lasting or life-altering, this can affect a person’s mental state, resulting in depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, as well as a loss of enjoyment of certain activities or an inability to perform specific tasks altogether.

Recent Cases of Intersection Crashes in St. Louis

Unfortunately, recent intersection crashes in the St. Louis area have led to tragic consequences. In the early morning hours of August 17, 2020, a teenager riding in the flatbed of a pickup truck died when the truck collided with a car at the intersection of 10th Street and Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis, near America’s Center Convention Complex. The crash’s impact ejected the 17-year-old girl from the truck, and she died at the scene.

The other vehicle’s driver, a 2014 Dodge Charger, was going 20 miles per hour over the speed limit, and prosecutors charged him with involuntary manslaughter.

In June 2021, a motorcycle driver lost his life when his motorcycle collided with a car in South St. Louis, at the intersection of Rosa Avenue and Gravois Avenue, near the D.B. Cooper’s Safehouse pub and just at the edge of the neighborhoods of Princeton Heights and Boulevard Heights. The motorcycle driver flew from his bike, and paramedics pronounced him dead when he arrived at the hospital.

The driver of the car, a 2008 Toyota, survived the accident and is cooperating with authorities.

What makes St. Louis roads so dangerous?

In recent years, crime surges are plaguing Missouri, specifically in the St. Louis downtown area, where young people often race their cars late at night on city streets like South Broadway. In addition, reckless and drunk driving are becoming serious problems on St. Louis roadways, resulting in an uptick in crashes. Many occur at intersections, where drivers are speeding, distracted, or impaired, sometimes even affecting pedestrians crossing the roads.

Certain intersections in St. Louis are inherently hazardous for other reasons besides negligent driving, including poor lighting and visibility, narrow lanes, relatively heavier traffic, and unclear traffic signs or lights.

Who is liable for an intersection accident in St. Louis?

Missouri law mandates that car crash victims are subject to comparative negligence rules, meaning you can recover compensation if you’re in an accident determined by your degree of fault. For example, if the court awards you $100,000 in compensation for your injuries or damages, but you share 10% of the blame for the accident, you can receive 90% of the compensation award, or $90,000.

If you can show that the other driver’s negligence caused the accident, they are liable for your damages. A car accident attorney like our St. Louis team of personal injury lawyers at NST Law can review your case and calculate its worth to determine fair compensation. Never admit fault of any kind before speaking with an attorney who can help advocate for your right to recover your financial losses incurred in an intersection crash.
